Garbage & Recycling

The Town of Grand Island's residential recycling and garbage collection is provided by a private company through a contract overseen by the Town Engineering Department.

Garbage Guidelines

Size & Weight

Containers, bags, or bushels shall not exceed 60 pounds in weight, excluding trash or bulk items. Any material not in cans or bags should be securely tied in bundles no more than four feet in length.

Item Limit

Each week, up to 10 bags or containers, including 1 bulk item, such as a mattress, box spring, furniture, carpet, or appliance, may be placed for collection.

Collection Holidays

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

For Holidays that fall on a weekday, your collection will take place the following day and there will be a one day delay the remainder of the week. If the Holiday is on a weekend there will be no delay in collection.

Disposal of Electronics

GI Residents can schedule a drop-off of electronics to our E-waste partner, Buffalo Computer Recycling (BCR) by appointment only from Monday through Friday (9 am-4 pm) by calling BCR at 716-545-6369.

  • No Charge for Electronics  (Acceptable List)
  • For CRTs (old-style box TVs) and Plasma TVs, there is a $50 charge to recycle. Flat Screen LCDs are a $20 charge.
