The Scenic Woods project is designed to protect the environment in both the short and long term. The nature-oriented design of the trails and other amenities conserves natural resources while adding improvements that will support passive recreation and environmental education. Introducing public access was not accomplished at the expense of the natural resources that already exist. In fact, it is vital that these resources continue to exist so that they will provide for the habitat needs of the resident and migratory species that use the Niagara River corridor.

Scenic Woods is approximately 220 acres of woodlot and wetlands. It is home to numerous ecological communities including northern deciduous forest, successional shrubland, and old-field upland communities, and forested, shrub-scrub, wet meadow, and shallow emergent marsh wetland communities. Gun Creek flows along the western side of Scenic Woods.

Thanks, in part, to grants awarded by the Erie County Standing Committee of the Niagara River Greenway and New York State Regional Economic Development Council, the Town of Grand Island was able to complete Phases I-IA of Scenic Woods Bicentennial Park. The master plan project funds were provided through an Environmental Protection Fund Local Waterfront Revitalization Program grant from the NYS Department of State, Division of Coastal Resources (DCR).
